The Fuji Research Park supports the core of pharmaceutical development activities, from the discovery to developmental research. Every stage of the research process is being strengthened to ensure faster progress towards the clinical testing stage for groundbreaking new drug candidates.
Mission: Targeted pharmaceutical discovery research and functional analysis of pharmaceuticals, and the screening of drug candidate substances.
The Drug Discovery Research Laboratories undertake to perform standardized discovery research and functional analysis of pharmaceuticals and screening of drug candidate substances, with the aim of the production of new medical products. The Laboratories have formed unique assays making use of Kyowa Hakko Kirin's strengths in biotechnology and genome technology and matched these to high throughput screening technology for effective screening of new drugs. The Laboratories emphasize in particular discovery research into new mechanisms for cancer treatments, anti-inflammatory / antiallergic and treatments for kidney diseases, making use of fundamental research based on drugs utilizing human genome information.
Mission: Selecting chemical compounds worthy of development phase through pharmacological evaluation of new candidate substances found in the drug discovery Research.
The Pharmacological Research Laboratories evaluate new drug candidates found in discovery research through molecular biological or pharmacological methods. Project teams are also formed with researchers from the Fuji Research Park and other laboratories to focus on drug-like compounds. Compounds confirmed to be safe and have excellent pharmacological effects are given higher priority assessment aimed at clinical testing.
Mission: Research into and optimization of the seeds of new drugs.
The Medicinal Chemistry Research Laboratories utilize medicinal chemistry synthesis techniques on anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory / antiallergic medicines, and medicines for kidney diseases. The seeds of new drugs are developed and optimized in a speedy and logical fashion through the active use of combinatorial chemistry technology, and drug design or analysis of the interaction of new drug candidate substances and proteins through x-ray compound body structural analysis and molecular design technology. Efforts are also being made toward the development of chemo-informatics through building an integrated database of information on all the properties of various substances.
Mission: The creation of new drug compound candidates predicted to be favorable drug kinetics in the human body.
The Pharmacokinetic Research Laboratories are engaged in the pharmacodynamics of new drug compound candidates in the human body, looking for solutions to the relationship between various properties and pharmacokinetics of the compounds. Working with researchers in the fields of medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, molecular design, pathology and molecular biology, the Laboratories aim to create new drug compounds predicted to act effectively within the human body. Investigations are made into the absorption / distribution / metabolism and excretion of the developed compounds in the body with the ultimate aim of clinical studies and application for approval.
Mission: Planning / assessment / analysis of toxicity testing using experimental animals and cells.
The Toxicological Research Laboratories carry out assessment of the safety of drug candidate substances. Investigations are made principally into general toxicity, local affection, genotoxicity, safety pharmacology and so on, the results gained being of great value in the prediction and prevention of side effects in humans. Active use is made of the most advanced knowledge and technology, including toxicity analysis at the genetic level.
