Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co., Ltd. (President: Tadashi Hirata) held a meeting entitled "Application of adult stem cell technologies to drug discovery (Stem cell based drug discovery)" on March 6th (Wednesday) at Otemachi First Square West Tower. The purpose of the meeting was to explain about Kyowa Hakko's basic research activities in the field of regenerative medicine, particularly about the patents shown in [*1], which have been applied for and made public, to the journalists from major newspapers and industry magazines, reporters of financial news, and other media people who attended the meeting.
Kyowa Hakko succeeded in developing three technologies to isolate and expand the following three stem cells in model animals:
- Adult neural stem cells (Kyowa Hakko has an original method to isolate and expand the rodent adult neural stem cells.)
- Adult mesodermal stem cells (Kyowa Hakko has applied an international patent on its finding of originally identified adult mesodermal stem cells.)
- Adult pluripotent stem cells (Kyowa Hakko has applied for two patents on adult pluripotent stem cells.)
We believe Kyowa Hakko can be at an advantageous position in the development of new drugs which target stem cells based on these technologies illustrated in [*2]. Kyowa Hakko is going to effectively utilize these technologies in its core therapeutic areas, cancer and allergic diseases, and its strategic theme, central nervous system (CNS) diseases, to develop pharmaceuticals which satisfy medical needs from patients [*3].
